| Tired of shaving, waxing or
plucking body hair only to have it return days later? You may be
interested in Light-based Hair Removal (LBHR) using either laster or
IPL. Light-based hair removal systems use an intense pulsating beam
of light to remove unwanted hair. Whether on your face, arms, legs
or other problem areas, laser hair removal may be the best option if
you seek long-term results.

Light-based hair removal using laster
or IPL is used for people who want to remove unwanted body hair.
Common treatment areas include the legs, armpits, upper lip, chin
and the bikini line. Although light-based hair removal does not
guarantee permanent hair removal, it does extend the "hair-free"
period which can vary from several months to several years. With
multiple treatments, long-term permanent hair removal is possible.
Hair color and skin type are key
factors that influence the success of light-based hair removal. The
procedure is most successfull in people with dark hair (brown or
black) and light skin. However, it can also be used on people with
darker skin tones. |

Laser hair removal is effective on short, visible hair. Two to three
days before the procedure, you should shave the area to be treated
and allow it to grow to a stubble. Avoid waxing, electrolysis or
plucking the hair three weeks before treatment. Also avoid tanning
for two weeks prior to the procedure. |

During the laser hair removal
procedure, a hand-held instrument is applied to your skin. Depending
on the type of instrument used, a cooling device on the tip or a
cool gel will be used to protect the skin. The light passes through
the surface of the skin to tiny sacs, or hair follicles where hair
growth originates. The intense heat damages the hair follicle which
inhibits hair growth. It can take several treatments to provide an
extended hair-free period.
During the procedure, patients wear
goggles to prevent accidental exposure of your eyes to laser light.
You will feel a slight stinging sensation when the device is
activated. Often times, a topical local anesthetic is applied to
reduce discomfort before the procedure begins. This treatment causes
a slight charring of stubble, so you may notice an odor or singed
hair. This is normal. |

No medications or bandages are
necessary after the light-based hair removal procedure, although you
may notice some redness and swelling for the first few hours.
Stinging may also occur for the first 24 to 48 hours, and some
people have experienced a slight crusting of the skin.
After Treatment:
- Avoid exercise for the first 24
hours, as perspiration from exertion may increase irritation
caused by the laser.
- Avoid exposure to the Sun for
several weeks after treatment. After this period, make sure you
apply sunscreen whenever you're in the Sun. Avoid tanning booths
because the ultraviolet light can damage the skin.
- Do not wax or pluck hairs
between treatments.
- Do not pick at or manipulate
the skin in treated areas.
- Do not rub or scrub the treated
areas. You may gently wash the area with soap and water.

Studies show that up to up to 80-90% of treated hair is removed in
suitable candidates after multiple treatments, generally 4 to 6. The
remaining 10-20% of treated hair often thins and becomes lighter in
color. Results do vary from patient to patient, however, and some
will respond better to laser hair removal than others.
Multiple treatments can prolong the
duration of hair loss, but hair regrowth is always possible. As you
age, unwanted hair growth inevitably continues, and you may need
additional treatments in the future. |
